G+_Jason Perry
So I have been hearing mixed reviews of the SURFboard cable modems since they were picked up by Arris, so here is my question, Arris or Netgear? Or another option.

G+_David Wiggins
I've been using a surfboard since TWC upgraded speeds a while back (also ditching the $8/month extortion, er rental). I've been completely satisfied. I have just the modem, not the integrated router/ wifi. I use a pfSense machine and DD-WRT for Wi-Fi. I have occasionally had to reboot, but had to do that with the old one, too. Oddly enough, as a network geek, I am not too concerned with my modem, since I don't have top tier internet speeds at home. My wired devices are gigabit, but I've only once it twice had issues with things like streaming over the internet. In more concerned with local device-device connectivity. G+_Jason Perry
David Wiggins?, the reviews I have been reading is that since they sold to Arris there have been latency issues, the only reason I am concerned is because I use VoIP quite a bit. What's your opinion on how concerned I should be.
G+_David Wiggins
I found a thread on DSL reports about the problem. It looks like the issue or part of the Intel puma 6 chip. I'm not sure which models are on The Intel puma vs the Broadcom. There are a lot of people who get the newest docsis 3 with the highest throughput, even if it's twice what the ISP is providing. So make sure your device matches what you are getting. I I'm using the 6141, and the 6191 is the one specifically indicated with the problem. The SB6183 uses a Broadcom BCM 3383 chipset. If it is supported by your ISP, and meets the speeds of your plan, it should be OK. Also, if VoIP stability is a major concern, get it somewhere that has a good enough return policy that you can test drive for a month or so, and return if need be. I love new devices, but I tend to be slow to adopt the newest at chokepoints like the modem. Let others be the public beta for those products. I'll keep that for non-critical areas. Hope this helps, and if anyone has a contradicting point, please let me know. http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r31122204-SB6190-Puma6-TCP-UDP-Network-Latency-Issue-Discussion
G+_Jason Perry
Thanks David Wiggins?, I wish it was easier to find a teardown of products so people could make a more I formed comparison.
G+_David Wiggins
Yeah. The docs I looked through on the Arris surfboard website said nothing about what chipset each one used, I had so go this party for that info.
