G+_Jeff Gros
As a professional firmware developer, I learned CAN from the datasheet of the micro that I was programming with at the time. I'm afraid I won't be much help for easy tutorials. On a different note, I just wanted to bring up that that while CAN does have a CRC built in to it, its effectiveness is defeated due to bit stuffing. I would recommend using your own CRC for the payload.
G+_Jason Perry
After some hours of YouTube last night, I have realized my main I interest is just sniffing and for that I need to find a table of codes. The only thing I don't think I can sniff for is the VIN so I can identify which vehicle I am in.
G+_Golden Retriever
Do can communication devices have anything like a Mac
G+_Jeff Gros
CAN is somewhat similar to I2C. There is an address for the sender and receiver. However, it is not a unique identifier like a MAC address. Any VIN would probably be in the data payload, which is completely proprietary though and could be anything. Many low cost logic analyzers such as Saleae have CAN protocol decoding built in. You'll still have to interpret the results though.
G+_Jason Perry
From what I have seen, you can get a CAN to USB adapter and use wireshark, but a device like CAN tact will do a better job. If you are using Linux there are functions built in.
