G+_Jason Perry
If I plug a DAC into the optical audio out on the back know of my TV, will it cut the audio coming out of my TV?
G+_Ben Reese
It varies by TV, but probably not - or at least not by default. My new (1 year old) Vizio and my old (9 years old) Vizio both hear options in settings to disable the internal speakers. Other TVs I've setup have similar options. If you're going into a receiver, it may be able to feed the best quality audio over the HDMI that's already connected. I seem to remember reading that audio over optical and HDMI were the same quality.
G+_Travis Hershberger
Ben Reese Yeah, they're both digital signals. Reading those signals will be a little different, but the actual signal should be the same.
G+_DigitalMatrixIO (Eric L
I have yet to see a device sending audio via toslink sense in any way that the cable was connected. I am pretty sure it is just not a thing that is supported with the connection. It is entirely plastic so it would not be able to detect continuity. It is also unidirectional. G+_Golden Retriever
Many TOS link connected devices have real problems with not waking from sleep mode
G+_Jason Marsh
I've been using optical to get the audio from my Samsung plasma to my Sony AVR. It used to work quite well, but over the last year it's been spotty, with a daily reset of the audio options on the tv or the AVR necessary to restore audio playback. If you can, go with HDMI. G+_Golden Retriever
I need an HDMI audio break out cable, anyone have a good source?
G+_Jason Perry
Thanks Ben Reese?, I have zero experience using them. I just know they are they, and I get all kinds of questions about hacks for tech illiterate people who want to use additional speakers or headphones. G+_Jason Perry
Thanks Eric Leone?, That makes things easier for me. The last thing I would want to deal with is finding an override for the guy that wants to use headphones with his tv.
