G+_Jason Perry
Any suggestions on how to blanket my house with one Bluetooth connection?
G+_Ben Reese
Might need to be more specific. Like play music from one device to multiple rooms? My initial guess is that Wi-Fi woild be a better option - like DLNA.
G+_Travis Hershberger
Uh, why? Bluetooth isn't meant for that sort of thing.
G+_Jason Perry
I want to roam around with a Bluetooth device and maintain a connection. For instance, wandering around with a pair of Bluetooth headphones, and maintain the connection.
G+_Travis Hershberger
Jason Perry If you don't mind huge latency (just listening to music it wouldn't matter), you could cobble something together yourself with something like the ESP8233 boards. I don't remember any actual devices to enable that sort of thing tho.
G+_Jason Perry
My thought was to spread esp8266's all over the house. I just don't know if there is a way to make it connect back to one central location or manage the hand-off.
G+_Paul Hutchinson
Bluetooth is meant to be a PAN (personal area network) so its designed maximum range is something like 30 feet with no walls. Many real life uses only get 10 feet of good signal
G+_Jason Perry
Paul Hutchinson my biggest thing is I want to set my phone down when I get home and I don't want to sacrifice all the things that are Bluetooth only. I am also looking for wifi alternatives, but my hopes are just as bleak.
G+_Ben Reese
Maybe put your phone in a more central location? I can usually get 20~30 ft from my phone without losing signal. But really, I think you'll have to find a way to get away from BT for long-range / roaming. Perhaps something like the new tiny "Palm" branded phone. G+_Ben Reese
I bet you could do something with a Pi Zero-W and a portable battery pack. Not necessarily smaller than a phone though.
G+_Jason Perry
It's amazing the number of things that should have a simple solution given the technology we have today, but a good answer isn't there. My current thought is a using a Esp as a Bluetooth to wifi adapter? I bet it could fit on your key chain. Hmmmm...
G+_Travis Hershberger
Jason Perry I'm afraid it wouldn't be so simple as just handling a hand off. You'd have to repeat the signal all the way to and from. Bluetooth just wasn't designed for this sort of thing. Probably better handled through WiFi of some sort, and if you've having issues getting a WiFi signal through the entire house :-(
G+_Ben Reese
I don't have a Google Home device, but I'm imagining a device Google Home portable device that can receive a Google Cast audio connection. Your phone would stream to that. That device would then connect to your BT headset. Ideally it would be smaller than your phone, which is why I thought Pi Zero-W. Perhaps Chromecast audio + wired headphones + battery pack? I'm thinking a small Android phone is still the best option.
G+_Travis Hershberger
amazon.com - Robot Check I wouldn't trust something with a ROM that old out in public, but on your private network it should be fine.
