John Hillen <- what he said. I'm pretty sure you can't log with the free, and there's just something cool about being able to log your trips. It will mix data from your phone (GPS coordinates, acceleration, speed...) with the data from the OBD which you can later graph or analyze. Like, correlating misfire counts with RPM or engine load or speed.

And there's some "fun" stuff that I don't remember being in the free version (I haven't used the free for a long time though). Like automatic counters measuring 0-60 MPH, 0-100 KPH, ¼ mile, ? Mile, Horsepower...

Anyhow... If you just want to check the codes or get some immediate information, free is great. If want to log, graph, etc; I'd say it's worth the price.

It should run in the background, but I don't leave it running if I'm not in the car. My Bluetooth OBD2 reconnect real smoothly and I have to re-enter the pairing pin each time it connects. I chalk it up to being a Chinese mass-produced device. The MAC is even something generic like 00:11:22:33:AA:BB:CC.
