I agree with you for the most part but I think it'll be something based on Linux rather than what you probably meant by "Linux" in your post.  As an example, I had an issue on my Ubuntu 12.04 setup recently where Amazon Instant Videos were not playing properly.  I managed to find the solution looking through a couple of forums.  But reading through them I thought to myself that there is no way your "average" user would be able to figure this out.  Much like Android is based on Linux and has had great success, I actually think something like the ChromeOS on Chromebooks (also based on Linux) has a better chance of being adopted by consumers at large.

Matt. From what I've seen humming on the racks of the really big companies I near me LInux is well-entrenched in the server side of things.

Desktop Linux has come a long way but it isn't there yet. The ease of use stuff is getting so much better. The full package and updates with the new distribution and discovery features in something like Ubuntu is putting a fresh face on a very powerful OS.

I think by the time companies are doing their next ROI calculations (and looking at custom apps for their particular industry-segment) they will see the feasibility of Linux and their staff will not really notice the difference. The server room is proof of the concept.
