G+_George Kozi
Passing Thought: given that Microsoft in futzing around with Windows, essentially abandoning the desktop, this may be a time of growth for Linux. Something has to fill the vacuum...?
G+_Frank Pigeon
agreed, I have jumped on the linux bandwagon since I didn't like the direction of Win8
G+_KJ Kim
I agree with you for the most part but I think it'll be something based on Linux rather than what you probably meant by "Linux" in your post. As an example, I had an issue on my Ubuntu 12.04 setup recently where Amazon Instant Videos were not playing properly. I managed to find the solution looking through a couple of forums. But reading through them I thought to myself that there is no way your "average" user would be able to figure this out. Much like Android is based on Linux and has had great success, I actually think something like the ChromeOS on Chromebooks (also based on Linux) has a better chance of being adopted by consumers at large. G+_George Kozi
for it to succeed it would have to be "click and it works" and secure. No Byzantine whistles and bells, no jungle of versions and packages.
G+_Matt Lyons
You're underestimating how dug in Microsoft is with businesses. The majority of big companies aren't switching platforms anytime soon.
G+_George Kozi
when they realize that Microsoft wants them all to be "tablets", they will have no choice...
G+_Dave Trautman
Matt. From what I've seen humming on the racks of the really big companies I near me LInux is well-entrenched in the server side of things. Desktop Linux has come a long way but it isn't there yet. The ease of use stuff is getting so much better. The full package and updates with the new distribution and discovery features in something like Ubuntu is putting a fresh face on a very powerful OS. I think by the time companies are doing their next ROI calculations (and looking at custom apps for their particular industry-segment) they will see the feasibility of Linux and their staff will not really notice the difference. The server room is proof of the concept.
