I'm looking to build my first quad. I have a 3d printer and I'm decent with a soldering iron and most things electronic. My starting budget is $1k. Can someone point me in the right direction to get me started? I want to start with a larger quad (450) and build from there. I want a platform that I can use for live video feed. All help is appreciated

Best advice I got before starting into the build your own quad, was get a trainer first.  The Syma x5 series is a good place to start, because the controller is so close to the standalone transmitters.

I know it's only ~$60.  You are going to crash and break things starting out (and later on as well, just not as often).  So go crash, burn, and break the $60 one before you make yourself one amazing craft.

I know you said build. But with that budget and video is your focus, have you thought about a phantom 3 standard? Other people can chime in.

I know Bryan Burnett and Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ have did some repairs on older Phantoms.

Building your own allows you to customize and get more for your buck.

So i'm looking on Amazon for the Syma x5 and they have it for $25, yet i see one on XJL Shopping for $57  is it the same quad?  I'll order one of those for flight training once i know where to get it from.  I also like the DJI Phantom 3.  But I'm the type of person who likes to tinker and mod so if I were to purchase the phantom, could the parts be used on a custom build in the future?

I have the Syma X5SC (paid about $80US). It's the best in its price range, and a lot of fun to fly.

My dad just bought the Phantom 3 Professional (about $1250US). Everything about it seems top quality, and it flies like a dream. With a controllable 4K camera on a gimbal, high definition video streaming back to the controller, GPS-stabilized/controlled flight, and a range of over a mile, it's definitely worth the money.

Wayne Hobbins thanks for the advice..  now time to google up on what one i want to build, i f any.  is it possible to build one that has the fancy flight planning like 'follow', orbit, gps way points.. and real time display to a mobile device.. things like that?  I have vision of writing code to control the craft and not just controlling it with the transmitter.
