G+_John Foreman
I'm looking to build my first quad. I have a 3d printer and I'm decent with a soldering iron and most things electronic. My starting budget is $1k. Can someone point me in the right direction to get me started? I want to start with a larger quad (450) and build from there. I want a platform that I can use for live video feed. All help is appreciated
G+_Bostjan Cadej
Right direction to get started: watch all Know How shows where they explain how to buil quad. Start with older shows.
G+_Eddie Foy
first question: have you flown a trainer? if not, double that budget for the carnage.
G+_Travis Hershberger
Best advice I got before starting into the build your own quad, was get a trainer first. The Syma x5 series is a good place to start, because the controller is so close to the standalone transmitters. I know it's only ~$60. You are going to crash and break things starting out (and later on as well, just not as often). So go crash, burn, and break the $60 one before you make yourself one amazing craft. G+_Rob Yesta
I know you said build. But with that budget and video is your focus, have you thought about a phantom 3 standard? Other people can chime in. I know Bryan Burnett and Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ have did some repairs on older Phantoms. Building your own allows you to customize and get more for your buck. G+_John Foreman
So i'm looking on Amazon for the Syma x5 and they have it for $25, yet i see one on XJL Shopping for $57 is it the same quad? I'll order one of those for flight training once i know where to get it from. I also like the DJI Phantom 3. But I'm the type of person who likes to tinker and mod so if I were to purchase the phantom, could the parts be used on a custom build in the future? G+_John Foreman
I'm assuming by TX your talking about the transmitter? Remember, i'm a noob so i'm not up on all the lingo and acronyms.
G+_Carlton Dodd
+John Foreman I have the Syma X5SC (paid about $80US). It's the best in its price range, and a lot of fun to fly. My dad just bought the Phantom 3 Professional (about $1250US). Everything about it seems top quality, and it flies like a dream. With a controllable 4K camera on a gimbal, high definition video streaming back to the controller, GPS-stabilized/controlled flight, and a range of over a mile, it's definitely worth the money. G+_John Foreman
Carlton Dodd where did you get the Syma X5SC? do you have a web link?
G+_Travis Hershberger
I got mine from Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=syma+x5c I've since broken the frame. I'm starting to put my first custom one together, so I don't feel the loss so much (plus, it's cheap enough to break, a lot.)
G+_Carlton Dodd
John Foreman Amazon as well. Looks like the price dropped: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00WFLH0GO/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_awdm_NbA8vb4F6KRM9
G+_Carlton Dodd
John Foreman Be sure to get the "X5SC". MUCH better than the other X5 models.
G+_John Foreman
What about the x5sc-1? It was looking like the best. No?
G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
With $1k, you can build yourself a HECK of a quad. Start with a trainer, then jump straight to a hex or X8.
G+_John Foreman
Wayne Hobbins headless mode? and the youtube that i just watched showed the sc-1 didn't have a problem with head wind and the sc did. Now i'm all confused
G+_John Foreman
Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ is there a know how episode that you talk about the hex or x8 builds? If not, do you have one in the works?
G+_John Foreman
ok, I have this one in my amazon cart http://www.amazon.com/Syma-2-4GHZ-6-axis-Quadcopter-Camera/dp/B00NARG8ZQ/ do i pull the trigger? I also have this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LK0DY3O/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3DF7WSP6NOKLR Am I good?
G+_Carlton Dodd
Wayne Hobbins While it certainly has a problem with wind, the motors are a bit bigger (I've held both together when I was trying to replace one in my X5SC). I've also heard it is more stable than the X5C (based on reviews I've read/seen).
G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
John Foreman I have built and filmed both a H6 and a X8. --- But... it may not be for "Know How" (Shhhhhhh.... it's a secret)
G+_Carlton Dodd
John Foreman The first link is not the model I recommend, but choice is up to you. I bought a set of 5 spare batteries similar to the spares you linked, but my set were 800mAh.
G+_Travis Hershberger
John Foreman Almost any quad you fly/build is going to have problems dealing with wind. It's not like you can make one heavy to reduce the inertia imparted to them by the wind.
G+_John Foreman
pulled the trigger on the X5C. Cant wait to start my training.
G+_John Foreman
Wayne Hobbins thanks for the advice.. now time to google up on what one i want to build, i f any. is it possible to build one that has the fancy flight planning like 'follow', orbit, gps way points.. and real time display to a mobile device.. things like that? I have vision of writing code to control the craft and not just controlling it with the transmitter.
