G+_George Kozi
Idiocy and arrogance in the name of science. This is not about tech, but illustrates what happens when science only cares about itself. You don't kill something old, to determine how old it was when you killed it. You just don't. Until scientists killed it to determine Ming's age. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-205_162-57612409/ming-the-clam-worlds-oldest-animal-was-actually-507-years-old/

G+_George Kozi
I read the article. It still does not justify it. Want insight into climate change? Look at ice cores. Want to know how old something is? Do some carbon dating.
G+_George Kozi
the fact is that the creature is dead. Who knows how long it would have lived? By the same logic, they could justify chopping down the giant sequoia's to count the growth rings.

G+_Ben Miller
Why not count the rings on the outside in the first place?!
G+_Mike Clark
The famous story about the grad student who cut down a truly ancient bristlecone pine in the 1960s (http://www.terrain.org/essays/14/cohen.htm) has a number of parallels...and, to my mind, was just as inexcusable.
