G+_Andrew Schwenk
Multicopter question. Is there any reason why we don't see more 250 X8 drones? Like 4 up facing motors and 4 down facing motors.
G+_Quadflyingmedic
The new sp3 board from dominic is the only naze style board that will support 8 motors. He mentioned that he may build one in the future
G+_Eddie Foy
APM & PixHawk support 8 motors. But I think it just wouldn't fly all that well.
G+_Andrew Schwenk
I'm curious because State Farm uses that design, except on a much larger scale. They have 16 kilos of thrust and the drone weighs 8 kilos. But why is that design not used for recreational use if it's so "efficient" if I may. G+_Quadflyingmedic
Dont think they are as efficient as a regular quad. Twice the motors and 4 props are in turbulent air from the upper props. They can lift a lot, but not as efficient as a regular quad
G+_Brian Goossen
I was looking into building a 450 in this style. I could not find much about them. [3DR makes the X8+ for $1350.] It seems like the down side is dirty air for the 2nd prop. The plus side is if one prop or motor fails, it stays in the air. Sounds like a reliability play more than anything... but I'm just going off some googling I did weeks ago...
G+_Quadflyingmedic
Brian Goossen for that size frame an amp or pixhawk would work fine. I have not used cc3d but it can do 8 Motors too, tried cc3d couldn't get my hex to hover pulled it for a flip32 and all is good. The redundancy is a good point on this type of setup
