G+_Barry Brown
250mm racer quads are fun, but have you tried the world of micros? Here is my little fleet so far. Top left is a carbon fiber H frame with 7mm motors, an AlienWii flight controller, Lemon receiver, and Hubsan props. To the right is the same FC and Rx on a polycarbonate cross frame with 8.5mm motors and Parrot props. Finally, at the bottom is a Hubsan X4 "transplant"—the guts of an X4 on a poly frame. Spektrum controller shown for scale.

G+_Quadflyingmedic
Those look cool. Would be nicer to fly indoors than the tiny micros
G+_Barry Brown
Great questions! Micro quads can be built from parts just like their larger siblings. There is a thriving, if small, community of micro enthusiasts. The clear poly frames are from Picnic Quads (picnicquads.com). They are either the Efficiency II or Efficiency X "Integrated Micro" frames, about $10. The carbon "Micro H" frame is from rc-drones.com ($20). Motors are from micro-motor-warehouse.com, about $25 for a set of four. They sell their own line of polycarbonate frames, some of which look just like the Picnic frames. I've got a Dream Catcher frame on order from them. MMW also sells the AlienWii flight controller ($50). The receiver is a Spektrum-compatible Lemon, available from Ready To Fly Quads ($5). Hubsan props can be bought nearly everywhere. I got the Parrots from Amazon. Genuine Parrots are pricey ($7 for four), but are well made. Prop vibration is an issue with the micro quads; balanced props make a huge difference. All micros use the tiny 1S LiPo batteries like you find in the Hubsan and Syma toy quads. But with the open frames they can be slung underneath instead of stuffed into a tiny compartment. I use 500 or 600mAH batteries, typically. The hardest part to obtain is the flight controller. The AlienWii is almost always out of stock. Alternatives are the Lulfro ($60 and usually out of stock, too) and the HobbyKing Micro MWC ($40). The latter is a pain to set up, but flies pretty well once it's working. The Alien "just works" out of the box. I'm having a blast flying these little critters around!
