G+_Barry Brown
PSA: Set your failsafes. There was a posting in the Reddit Multicopter forum about an operator who watched in horror as his quad flew off into oblivion after it lost contact with his transmitter. Set your receiver's or flight controller's failsafe mode. This controls what the quad does if it loses contact with the transmitter. Many receivers, by default, will simply keep the motors running at the same speed. It's better to, at the very least, set it to cut the throttle so the quad falls to the ground. Test your failsafe on the ground with the props taken off. Turn on the quad and radio. Throttle up. Then turn off the transmitter. If the failsafe is working, the motors will stop. G+_Eddie Foy
DJI Phantom fly-aways are quite common. (getting better then good GPS lock before take off helps a LOT)
G+_Michael Heinz
Yeah, crashing to the ground is sub-optimal, but it's better than losing the quad completely.
G+_Barry Brown
It's not so much about losing the quad. Think safety: did your out-of-control quad hit somebody? Did it land on a highway? Crash into a window? Those are the truly scary questions.
