G+_Brandon Bailey
With all of the streaming devices and cloud storage now days I am debating if building a FreeNAS+HTPC worth the effort?
G+_Jason Eckelstafer
HTPC's main value I've gotten is that so many content owners are still locking their videos by device type. I can watch a more on my HTPC than I can on any of my streamers (I own all the big name streamers).
G+_Ben Reese
I wouldn't build a HTPC if you have a home server of some sort. I've got a Fire TV and a machine running a Plex server. If I can't stream it from the Internet (Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime...), I can from my server.
G+_Ben Reese
Also, KODI will run on the Fire TV, which is what's used on a lot of HTPCs.

G+_Brandon Bailey
Ben Reese My initial plan is to digitize the DVD collection I have on a media server (NAS system), also have backups to some of the music I have and photos then have crashplan ( or another service, that is the one I am currently looking at ATM, if you have another suggestion please let me know.) setup to back up the NAS server (because two backups are better than one ;) ). Then have a streaming device that can access the photos, music, and movies that are digitized also have the ability to access Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, TuneIn radio, iheart radio, Youtube, google etc.
G+_Eddie Foy
Tracking comes with all cloud services and streaming devices.
G+_Ben Reese
As in the manufacturer tracking? Yeah... I'm ok with some tracking if I get something in return - like better recommendations. Since Synology will run Plex and CrashPlan, that's my target NAS. I'm cheap though and hoping XPenology will run on my current (old) machine and I'll build a new one for me to use regularly. G+_Ben Reese
BTW... CrashPlan uses about 1GB RAM for every TB of data backed up. So to backup a 4TB NAS we'd need an extra 4GB RAM just for CrashPlan.
G+_Doug Wagner
If you have no 'local' non-PC storage, your FreeNAS would be a key part in your 3-2-1 backup strategy, er, you do have a backup strategy yes? Anyway please check out 3-2-1. It can be basic and effective.
G+_Doug Wagner
I am a fan of Crashplan. Has a lot to offer no matter which plan you pick.
