G+_George Kozi
Paul Thurrott Leo Laporte Originally shared by George Kozi Because I have a Windows 8 pc and I like gaming, I had to download DirectX from Microsoft. Imagine my surprize when this thing popped up on my screen. It reminded me of that ASK toolbar that was shoved down our throats not so long ago. Quiz: Can you imagine what I yelled out at the computer?
G+_Matthew Ross
My guess: Either "F@&$ing Microsoft!" Or "F@&$ you, Microsoft!"
G+_George Kozi
Something a lot more colorful than that.

G+_Phillip Stewart
I find it hard to believe that Direct X isn't built in to Windows 8.
G+_Phillip Stewart
DirectX 11.2 is included in Windows 8.1, Windows RT and Windows Server 2012 R2. Note There is no standalone update package for DirectX 11.2. You can only install this DirectX version through Windows Update in Windows 8.1, Windows RT and Windows Server 2012 R2. G+_George Kozi
This DirectX requirement was the reason I haven't played Entropia Universe since I foolishly updated from Windows 7 to 8 there is a thing about the Direct x version they use... Some games don't use the latest one. It's a compatibility thing.
G+_George Kozi
As I said, Entropia, and just now, when I installed the latest Open Broadcast Software package (a TWITCH thing) it asked for it again.
G+_Phillip Stewart
Trying to play a 2003 game on a 2013 operating system. Yeah, that might be a problem if the game isn't well coded or DirectX 11 missed some little thing required for backwards compatibility.
G+_George Kozi
I don't mind installing a older DirectX version. although it should not be necessary. It's the bing bar thing that's maddening. The Windows 8 PC is binged up enough already out of the box.
G+_Phillip Stewart
Perhaps there is a way to run the game without installing DirectX 9. Did you try running it in WinXP compatibility mode?
G+_George Kozi
Nope, I haven't thought of it. But I have it now on the machine for the OBS program. One of these days I gotta get off of windows. I always had a windows PC on my desk, but lately... And besides, not even Microsoft believes in the Desktop anymore. It keeps pretending that it is a tablet. It's just a pity that (IMHO) the richest game experience is still to be had on the PC.

G+_George Magdaleno
I prefer to use the word Choose instead of Downgrade. SSDs are so inexpensive you can swap out your Windows 8 drive and replace it with a new SSD formatted for Windows 7.

G+_Sara Stephens
Ugh. Wrapped software is so annoying. Java adds the ask bar, Adobe flash adds McAffey, etc. I understand why they do it: advertising. It's still annoying.
