We tend to assume that there is something linear about human development... from the primitive dumb , to clever us. But things are never that simple. 

 

Things can be lost, or made first inaccessible, then forgotten about. The Romans had concrete, they built with it... and central heating... and public sanitation... and... just look at that thing in the picture.
