Now is the time for some software company to step in and embrace the desktop wholeheartedly. All the people that should keep it up to date seem to be dazed by mobile and designing only for it, forgetting that there are countless millions of desktops out there.

People are using mobile more, but not moving totally to it. They are using mobile in addition to the desktop.

What sort of improvements are you looking for? There are a few improvements to Win 8 over Win 7 on the desktop (and a few annoying things), but if the change was too radical people would still rail against it too.

As for people using mobile in addition to the desktop. I'm not sure how true that is - or whether they should be using a mobile and a desktop. I know a lot of people use a laptop to store their iTunes collection for syncing - and that is it, and all the main Mobile OSs are trying to move away from that. My guess is that for most people a laptop is more than they need, and a tablet works just fine.

Yeah, it's a odd problem as I see it from both points of view (as a Windows user). The changes they made for Win7 are excellent, and can fly around the desktop from app to app with ease now.

I also think that mobile OS's are the future for the majority of users, and I can see why MS are chasing that market. Putting the Modern UI and the desktop together in one version is very odd. MS obviously thought everyone would move their desktop apps to Modern UI versions, and the desktop would slowly wither away...

As for improvements. I mainly see them on the Modern UI side, and I think a lot of them are coming soon. If we take WinRT as a pure Win 8 device - there should be no reason to have a desktop. Settings should contain all the settings, and possibly an advanced tab would take you to all Control Panel settings. Office apps should run full screen. Finally, there needs to be a quicker method to switch between apps. The bar on the right housing all your apps should be dockable (if it isn't already - yes like the taskbar) so you can easily tap on an app to use it. Then MS could separate a consumer version and a desktop version.
