G+_DGC Channel
Hi, Twit Know How... I am new here and I love watching Twit Know How... on YouTube. The reason for posting a question on here is that I have a small gaming channel (UK based) on YouTube and currently only have a USB HDD to record my streaming video. I am looking a doing a secure backup system. I don't have a large budget. However, I have been looking at building my own RAID system. I want to build a RAID system that can be accessed within my personal network. I am just wondering if that is a good idea to have it accessed via my Wifi, or to have a RAID system linked in via LAN? I am also wondering how the best way to attempt to build my own RAID backups. Also, the best way to build the RAID system so that I can easily update the system at any time? Thank you
G+_Terrill Cockeram
I would always connect a backup server on the lan port. As long as lan and WiFi are on same network WiFi devices still can use it.
G+_Paul Hutchinson
Just remember that a RAID mirror array by itself is not a backup, so keep using that external HDD as well. Backup means multiple copies on multiple devices and preferably on multiple media types (or at least brands of media, with video it's expensive to use anything but disk drives). A RAID mirrored array only counts as one copy towards a backup set because the shared hardware running the RAID array can fail killing both copies of the mirrored data all at once. G+_Peter Hanse
For RAID if you have old PC believe you could check out freenas.org - FreeNAS Storage Operating System | Open Source - FreeNAS - Open Source Storage Operating System for backup believe 3-2-1 backup. 3 copies of your data on 2 different media 1 copy offsite. But backup depends on how willing you are to lose your data and can you recover from other sources.
G+_Travis Hershberger
#1 RAID is not a backup, as Paul Hutchinson already mentioned. Keep using the is drive to make backups of your not going to improve on that system. I'd highly recommend a simple raid 1 volume on your video workstation. Probably software RAID based.
