G+_Rob Yesta
Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ What do you think? Good idea or gimmick? https://www.indiegogo.com/project/preview/5a6db84b#/story

G+_Ron Nichols
People thought the portable computer wouldn't catch on either. I think Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ could throw one in a car, drive it over to Bryan Burnett s house, and print up a replacement to any number of quad parts that he always seems to be breaking... Another possibility, would be to allow the construction of components in-field, where normal parts replacement would take weeks to ship. Set-up crews could head out to a job site with one of these, thereby decreasing cost overruns due to part related down time. Doctors in remote regions of the world, could 3d print prosthetic parts, umbilical cord clamps, etc., as they travel from village to village with one of these in the back of their vehicle. G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
I think there's absolutely a good use case for a field-portable materials printer... but I don't think it will be filament-based. It's slow, too easy to miscaibrate, and doesn't travel well. Instead, I think field-parts could be created by a stereo lithography printer. They're fast, sturdy and easy to transport. Still... cool idea... I'd get one if I had the cash. :)
G+_Ron Nichols
Wayne Hobbins you're right, of course. I should have specified that my grandiose visions of portable replicator technology couldn't be achieved with a $400 indiegogo machine. lol
G+_Ron Nichols
I retract my use if the word "these" :(
