I don't think the ds1515+ will come down any more in price, but if you are getting it I would suggest getting more ram if you are going to have high IOPS (we have several running for clients and they sometimes pause while buffering requests). They are expandable to 6 gig. See if memorydepot.com - Computer Memory Upgrade // Solid State Storage // Memorydepot.com has the ram cheaper. Not sure if its proprietary but i suspect not.

What drives were you considering?

Wise move RE: the Management. Maybe you can convince her to swing for an extra to keep at the office to replicate for offsite. I keep hoping my grandad will upgrade from DSL so we can backup to each other (different states, so fire/flood/hurricane protection.

Failing that, I'll build a NAS for my cousin with a similar setup.

Also, for extra paranoia points, look at Glacier and setting up long term cold storage, fairly low overhead price . Where they get you is on recovery, bit still reasonable.

Thinking about NAS myself for simple backups at home. Maybe some cloud storage, or media share if it's capable, not much beyond that other than to tinker with the options available on the NAS. How about the DS416j Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ mentioned in some episodes a while back that he liked? It's going for around $300, no drives. Other than number of drives, what else does the 1515 get you?

Dan Molseed I would do extensive research on the features included in which ever one you select.

Here is a case in point, I purchased the single drive WDmycloud only to find out the ability to add apps as in Plex was not included in what they call the lower end NAS units.

This might not be the case with Synology as this is the one I am researching and so far have not found any such limitation, but it is better safe then sorry.

The Synology still has a couple questions in need of answers for my eventual purchase (so very close to buying) and that is drive usage. For example on the Drobo you can hotswap drives the newer drive only need to be larger then the one you are swapping out is this true for the Synology unit? The second question; notice SJPadre stated you could update 4GBs of ram need to find out if that is the max it can handle.

Those are the things my pre-purchase questions are in need of answers before pulling the trigger.
