Hey, smart people of the twit community, I was hoping some of you would be able to give me some ideas how i could do this. My family had a home invasion a couple years ago and my mom is usually home by herself and the front door has a high tiny window which she cant see whos at the door since she's shorter and she has a bad habit of just opening it without having a clue whos there. So I was wondering if there's any way to set up a small camera that can see outside the door and have a small display mounted on the wall next to the door inside so she can easily see whos at the door. Any ideas you have i would love to hear them . Something simple would be great or maybe since i have a Synology doing with it with Surveillance Station Client and somehow having live view displayed on the screen.

The backup camera idea is brilliant! There's even wireless models if you don't want to run a cable between the two.

I've also seen peep-hole cameras and, of course, there's probably 5 different brands of doorbell cameras.

I'm curious what other's suggest too. I'm planning on putting a camera outside my front door and running the feed to Synology Surveillance Station, but you can't do that with Ring.

Cell phone and induction charging has been on my mind for a while now. To experiment I wanted to take a cell phone mount it so it is flush with the surface of the door and have only the camera hole exposed outwardly. Second part of this was to run wire for charging battery on phone thru the door hinge area via induction coupled charging connection. Having it connect to you LAN all kinds of options are ready and waiting for discovery. Now back to my IOT sprinkler project.

Rud Dog? totally get that, but we sometimes over think things and our families have to deal with the consequences :) I installed everything smart home in my place a few years ago and my wife struggled to use our house. I had to replace smart bulbs with smart switches, ect to make it tech friendly and normal person friendly.

In the vein of this discussion, I tried a wall mounted phone and tablet as a smart home controller and the issue I always ran into was if the device becomes non-responsive, then it was just frustrating for the user.

For this particular issue, here is how I did it...

I have a camera mounted on the front porch, that connects to my Synology Surveillance Station. Near the front door I have a small TV with a Amazon Fire TV stick plugged in running DS Cam to view the cameras around the house.

This works pretty good until the fire TV stick wedges and I have to power cycle it to get it back on.
