G+_George Kozi
This needs to be said. January - February - March - April, and a bit of May. That's all it took. In this short time Mike Elgan has developed into a serious, consistent, agreeable, mature TV host. Not that he shouldn't still work on his style and delivery (we don't want all this praise to get into his head). In this period, TNT has morphed into something unprecedented. Just look at the range of topics and the wealth of serious people contributing to it, day in, day out. Mike is there every day, and is able to keep an eye on the shop, winch gives Leo and Lisa a bit more space to live. In fact, the whole network has grown up. So... yes, Leo Laporte and Lisa Kentzell were right, and they do know how to steer this ship.
G+_Lauren Glenn
I'll have to check him out..... after seeing his first few weeks and the shakeup after Tom left (with Fr. Robert really shining with Know How and making that a more technical show, IMO), I guess I need to take another look at TNT and TN2.
G+_Brian Kemper
Gary Reichert - Yes, they should just put up bullet points and have him wing it from there.
G+_Mike Elgan
George Kozi Thank you, George. I really appreciate that. And I also truly appreciate your engagement with TNT and TWiT shows in general. : )
G+_George Kozi
well, TWiT is almost all the TV I watch... I am sometimes cheating by watching Discovery or Comedy Central, but that's all. So, of course, I'll post stuff about it on these forums. Opinionated human here... Can't help it... it's on my hard drive...
G+_Eng. Jorge Santana
Comepletely agree Mike Elgan has grown a lot, yesterday show shows how much. Great job!
G+_Jeff Stevens
Disagree. I continue to find Mike stiff and less fun. I always found the silly/fun aspect of TWiT to be its differentiating factor, and Mike doesnt' fit into that. If you like it, great. I don't. G+_Randy Hudson
I also think Mike Elgan is doing a great job overall with TNT. There are some things I'd like to see change, but hey, it's not my show.
G+_Ron Rickert
Yesterday's TWiT has shown me once more, that I don't enjoy Mike Elgan as a host. I have to agree with Jeff Stevens here. Mike's stiffness and overall way he presents stories/topics is too formal and therefor not my cup of tea. I do appreciate his contributions as a guest on TWiT shows though. G+_Randy Hudson
It's Mike Elgan's way of presenting that I appreciate the most, followed by the show length. TN2 is entirely too short and many of the shows hosted by Leo are unwatchably long winded. In fact the shows feel like they are reversed. A quick 5-10 minute overview would be more appropriate in the morning with a longer format news show in the evening. Mike's presentation style is that of an evening news anchor, which to me feels appropriate for a show that is trying to be the daily (tech) news. It's not a sitcom nor should it be a talk show format, which leads us to my main complaint about the show. Mike has way too may guests, and why only journalists? Most journalists are mostly full of shit IMHO. How about interviewing some actual industry experts instead??
G+_Rusty Van Praag
I think what this comes down to is building a brand beyond just Leo Laporte. Is Mike Elgan a good anchor for me? Absolutely not and that's why I do not listen him. But I'm sure that there are those who he appeals to and it helps build TWIT. Do I like everything thats on NBC? No. But there is good NBC programming. I think it's just one of those growing pains we will have to accept, that there's going to be parts of twit we just don't like.? G+_Rusty Van Praag
Randy Hudson I was afraid somebody would call me on that. Just an analogy to make a point. But if I really had to say.......How about Community and The Blacklist.
G+_Mike Elgan
In Mike's defense -- I mean in my own defense ; ) -- the reason hosting TWiT is hard and scary because it invites comparison with Leo, who is without peer. The only two options for any TWiT guest host is: Are you going to be worse than Leo, or are you going to be a LOT worse than Leo? ; ) Regarding TNT: It's a very different format from both TNT 1.0, and also from other TWiT netcasts. A lot of people get it, and love it. A lot of people don't. That's inevitable, because we're doing something new and different.
G+_Jeff Stevens
Mike Elgan I suspect that you've been in this business long enough not only to know you won't please everyone, but for that to bother you...less than it would most of us. Do what you do, do it the best you can, and let the chips fall where they may.
G+_Mike Elgan
Jeff Stevens It's a subtle point, but I'm totally used to being attacked for my ideas (you're an idiot!) as opposed to my personality (you're boring!). But, yeah, I've grown some thick skin over the years.
G+_Rusty Van Praag
Mike Elgan I appreciate comments. And I got to say I totally appreciate you jumping on and offering up thoughts on a thread that is pro/anti-Mike Elgan. To expound on want to said before, I don't think that you are bad or boring. I think that your style is not my cup of tea. Which I don't think is a bad thing, I think it's the natural evolution of twit. I mean, I didn't like everything on TechTV. And a lot of those shows added up to the some of a great network. So, I say keep doing what you doing. You're obviously attracting a following and taking twit in direction of evolution.? G+_Mike Elgan
Rusty Van Praag Thanks, Rusty. My new goal in life is to win you over. Let's be very clear: My goal is to make my audience the smartest kid in the class. I'm all about the information and the insight.
G+_Rusty Van Praag
Mike Elgan Wow! That's a great sentiment. Well, you got a shot.......next TNT I'm tuning in.
G+_Brian Lawson
The start was definitely rocky, but now TNT has hit a new full stride. The show is definitely different, but Mike Elgan's biggest influence has been to bring on the authors and authorizes of the stories they cover. Straight from the horse's mouth with questions, analysis, and insight beyond the article. I love this aspect and feel like it shapes TNT to more of a validated news source (which I think is what Leo Laporte is aiming for).?
G+_Rusty Van Praag
Mike Elgan Wow! I can honestly say that.........yes you have won me over. I agree with Brian Lawson that the show had a rocky start. And I think that's where I got off the train and decided it wasn't for me. But I liked your statement of "smartest kid in the class". And now after a couple weeks of listening, I appreciate what TNT is now and what you have brought to the show. Keep going!
