Does anyone have any good resources for home servers? I 'm trying to plan out a future build

I have a Mini running server.  Haven't delved into it deeply.

For what you described, look into a Synology NAS.  Does most server rolls and easy to use.  Mine is running E-Mail server, radius server, DHCP server, tftp server, DNS (off and on, and same for mac server.  Still figuring out DNS) Plex Server. And I back up to it via CCC.

Yup.  Works pretty good too.  My 8 year old LG NAS had an itunes server too.

Apple, IMOHO, has gone downhill in quality.  OSX is getting to be a mess and single minded. (also topped Windows and Linux for critical vulns in 2014)  But still on my MBP.  Had to but a refurbed because I wanted the ability to change battery, HD and RAM if I felt like it.  Can't do that with last few rounds of them.

Eddie Foy I agree. I've got a 2011 mini with upgraded tam,ssd,1tb hard drive. When I get a new Mac laptop 2012 mbp for the same reason. I don't need a retina display and a standard ssd is just finebfor my needs.

Now for the server part, you could go a few options. I've got a simple atom powered mini itx Ubuntu server that the mini sees for back ups. Could use free crashplan to back up ton it also. I've got a freenas box that has afp and time machine that it backs up to also and there isn't a single issue with it. But best bang for the Nick would be synology or qnap. IMO 4 bays and a PC ( not arm processors) are minimum with backups and streaming.they're about $300-$350 and you can run server apps, backups and streaming apps off either. After I finish up a new freenas build for a friend I'm buying a synology for "my dad" aka my offsite back ups.lol
