G+_George Kozi
Did you know that: Android can now wake you up when you're close to your bus stop? I don't wanna start anything, but shouldn't Siri do stuff like this too? Because with every new feature like this that Android puts out there, Siri looks dumber... pretty, but kinda dumb... G+_Feiris Wheel (Pat)
If you look at a lot of the "new" features in ios8 they are just features that Android has had for awhile now. This sort of thing is good for pushing the limits of what is out there. If Android didn't exist apple would still be selling the small screen iPhone and siri probably wouldn't exist. G+_Dave Trautman
Siri has been doing this for me for more than a year now. I have lots of reminders set to locations. "Remind me to get cream when I get near the store on my way home." Siri knows my store, and my home, and it signals me as I approach. I have used all kinds of Siri features now for a long time and I love them. Location-based commands are kind of easy.
G+_George Kozi
Dave Trautman good to know she can do it.
G+_Tyler Ahlfeldt
Dave Trautman I think geo-fencing, though still netting the same end result, is a different thing entirely. Google Now/Maps' ability to use transit information contextually is a big win for Google over Apple Maps. Ever since Apple dropped Google Maps, many iOS/mass transit users have lamented the lack of transit information. Also, unless you train siri with a location for every stop you will need, it becomes useless when you are using mass transit to go to a new location. G+_Mikel Potts
It's not about Siri. It's about Maps. We all know that Apple's maps has improved, but it has a fair way to go before catching up with Google, who have been at it quite a bit longer. Until you have accurate transit information in Apple maps, add ing the feature would be more pain than gain. As for why Google maps on iOS doesn't offer notifications for your bus stop, you'd have to ask Google. I'm fairly sure it's possible with iOS 7. At least I seem to get a lots of timely notifications from other third party apps.
G+_Dave Trautman
Thanks, Tyler Ahlfeldt and Mikel Potts for the clarification. Yes, specifically, Google knows where all the bus stops are. Siri only knows I am near my home. I suppose it's real a discussion about degree. Funny enough my non-cellular iPad also knows where I am and can notify me of things too. If I set it up right. But not through Siri unless I am using WiFi. I am also fortunate to subscribe to a service which has peppered the streets with WiFi for all its customers in the most popular places for Free. So, my ISP is doing me the favour, which is not available in other nearby municipalities. I suppose I've gotten used to Siri and having a location-based trigger for my reminders. But you're right, Siri never wakes me up when I am approaching my stop, only when I appear to be heading home (bus or otherwise).
G+_Mikel Potts
Dave Trautman Yes, even a wi-fi only iPad has some awareness of where it is; provided wi-fi is turned on, you have a few wi-fi networks in range, and they are in Apple's location database. You also need to have had a recent internet connection near that location so the iPad had a chance to download the information in your area (approximately 30 mile radius of connected location) It's far from being as accurate as an AGPS location. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5594
