Tried Googling for the IR receiver module that Padre mentioned in the Show Notes for 341. Only found one location (in Canada), and they sell them as 10 pcs. for $3.24 plus shipping.

 

I don't need 10 of them, so anybody here want a couple?

When you consider 'view angle' of the device... Many is better than few when trying to send/receive from any direction.

Black Merc: An interesting premise, but how would one connect multiple receivers to an Arduino?

 

Obviously you could connect them to different pins, but then you have to program the Arduino to compare all received inputs and determine which is the "correct" one. Seems easier to have just one input device and then wait until the User learns to point at it, as Padre did with Megan.

I don't have any to test with, but if I did I'd try putting 3-5 in parallel connected to the same 3 wires. It may not work, but would be easier than reading from all 3 independently and choosing the right one.

it all can be on one input, with the sensors pulling up to +v when receiving a signal, and a pull down resistor to return to gnd when not. we can tie the outputs in an OR gate configuration (http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/Electronic/or.html)

Black Merc Intriguing ... I like your three OR gate setup. don't really have a use for three, but I would almost build this just to see it work!
