Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ. I have a Buffalo 500gb Single HDD NAS Box. The Samsung HDD has finally crashed with the click of death and I want to put a WD hard disk in side and was wanting to know which would be best, ie WD Red, Black or Green. Thanks Geoff from Australia.

WD Red should always be used in RAID, those drives are not designed for single drive operation?

Red should never be used solo. I'd go Black unless its only used for like, periodic backups. Any uses where you read often or need read performance I'd go Black.

Yep, always stick with Black for single drives where performance matters, Blue if your under serious budget constraints.  Green...... don't touch with a 10 foot pole.  And like Marcin Wisniowski and andrej stefanovski Red for RAID.

Western Digital website would indicate that the WD Red it good for 1-8 bay NAS.  I've been using two Reds though not in RAID on my personal NAS system for well over a year now.

A 1 disk NAS is different that using this drive as an internal desktop drive. Go for the Red Geoffrey.
