G+_Mike Showers
Hi Kitas, I'm thinking about getting a Synology NAS for several purposes. I am a Noob regarding NAS, even though I have an Apple and Western digital network backup devices now. Here's what I'm trying to accomplish. 1. For cloud backup and storage for my very small business ( just me), and the household, with several Windows PCs and a Mac, as well as an assortment of tablets and phones. 2. To work as a Plex Server to upload a bunch of old family video tapes before they are no longer useable. PS - This might be an interesting project for the show. Bring on the motorcycle videos Brian...; 3. To constantly record my video cameras 3 Nest cams, 3 dlink cams, a Ring doorbell, and 2 Kuna security lights, from two separate physical addresses in two different states (is this even possible?); 4. To work as a Normal media server backup for my music which is now in 3 different cloud services. Is it possible to accomplish all of this with a single NAS? Recommendations? G+_Travis Hershberger
Possible, yes. Quick and easy, not so much. A Synology has a media server available natively, along with a client to record security camera footage. Getting both networks talking securely and deciding how much storage you need for the different video applications is what would be difficult. Drive selection well matter as well, well it be doing primarily vicious recording or file serving more? WD NAS or Seagate NAS cor serving files or WD Purple for.video recording. G+_Mike Showers
Travis, You've hit directly on my concern. I'd actually like to have the Synology at my vacation home so that I'd have some offsite backup for the regular house. I would really like to get one for there. Buying one for each location would defeat that purpose, besides being an expensive solution. Regarding the drive type, I'd like to replace the cloud subscriptions that come with the Kunas and the Ring. I would rather role my own than have several "eternal" subscription expenses. So there would be constant video feeds. Since I would really only need the security cameras in case of a problem, and I would still get alerts, I would hope to configure them to record for a week or a month, then record over the prior month. G+_Ben Reese
I don't see any issues with any of this except maybe in surveillance station. The NAS will come with license for 1 or 2 cameras, then it's $40-$50 per camera to add after that. To the best if my knowledge, it doesn't support Ring doorbells and it may not support some of your other cameras either. Other than that, I think Synology makes some amazing hardware and software! G+_Ben Reese
This is the first of a 3 part series on Synology Surveillance Station. I did a quick search and Kuna doesn't support 3rd party recording/control. I've checked in the past (because I wanted to get one) and Ring doesn't either. There's a good change the D-Link and Nest cams are supported.
G+_Mike Showers
It's a shame that the Kuna and the Ring force you to their subscription service in order to have a serviceable retention capability. Even then, they only pickup motion events or doorbells, not full time viewing. I had a theft event a week ago that didn't trip the sensors because it happened just outside my distance setting, which is why I'd rather the full time monitoring. But it would still seem to me that, if you can download the video to either an iPad or Android device and save it there, you should be able to do so to a server, especially one that transcodes video in a variety of ways. Isn't it just a software and networking issue or do I completely misunderstand how it works? Perhaps Synology won't get me where I want to go and I need to keep looking for a different solution, at least for the Kuna and Ring portions of it. G+_Mike Showers
PS? Thanks for your suggestions Ben and Travis. I looked at two of the Lon videos, and they are great at demonstrating how the Synology works.

G+_Rud Dog
Ben Reese Thanks, had no idea and have not heard it elsewhere concerning cost beyond 2 cameras.

G+_Ben Reese
Rud Dog I didn't realize it either until I went through Lon.TV?'s videos. Looking at their site, some boxes come with 1 license, others come with 2.
