I have not personally had the need to, but I do know about it, as I was one of the many AMA (Academy of Model Aeronautics) members who formally submitted a recommendation to the FAA.

In short, you will need a UAS COA (Certificate of Authorization) from the FAA, pursuant to Section 333. Begin the process and learn more here: https://www.faa.gov/uas/legislative_programs/section_333/
