G+_Dan Maxwell
Hi Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ, Would you share the details of your label system that you use for concealing your FAA number on your quads?
G+_Wayne Black
Yes, the world wants to know! I was thinking about this and was considering printing out a label with my number on it and then placing another label with "Return to Local Police Dept." over the top. Still perfectly legal and when the LEO contacts me I can instruct them to peel off the top label.
G+_Wayne Black
Forgot, also to include my DL number on visible label. This way the LEO could get the information to contact me but my FAA number would be concealed from public view. At least until everyone caught on to the trick. :-)
G+_Steve Martin
I understand a lot of people put the label inside the battery compartment. So long as it doesn't require a tool to open.
G+_Wayne Black
Steve Martin Understood, but a lot of people don't want their personal information available to the general public. Anyone who finds your drone can take the FAA number and look up where you live. I don't want that. It's nobody's business but the LEO and the FAA. G+_Steve Martin
I hadn't seen it would be publicly available. Where can we do that search. A link would be good.
G+_Dan Maxwell
I don't think it's available from the faa but you know it's only a matter of time before someone foyas it and posts it online.
G+_Wayne Black
Dan Maxwell It's public information unlike car registration. Public just like commercial and private airplanes. Why do you think the Padre is going to such links to keep the number secret? If someone flies over your house and you can get the tail number, you can find out who owns or is registered to that aircraft. This is my biggest gripe about the UAS registration. If I'm flying and somehow I loose control and my drone lands in the middle of a biker convention, I don't want 20 angry bikers knocking on my door when my shotgun only holds 16. :-)
G+_Wayne Black
See: http://www.faa.gov/uas/registration/faqs/#priv Privacy. "In the future, the registration database will be searchable by registration number only, but not by name or address. However, it is not searchable at this time." "The Government, in accordance with the requirements of the Privacy Act, protects and generally does not release personal information. Given the nature of UAS, in particular, the risk that the communications link between the operator of the UAS is disrupted or lost, and the risk of losing the UAS is larger than it is for other types of aircraft. Allowing searches of the unique identifying number of UAS will enable the return of these aircraft to their owners. Notice the word "generally". G+_Wayne Black
Another thing to consider. The UAS registration database is being handled by a third party contractor. In other words, given to the lowest bidder. :-)
G+_Wayne Black
Here's another link. http://www.forbes.com/sites/johngoglia/2015/12/18/faa-finally-admits-names-and-home-addresses-in-drone-registry-will-be-publicly-available/#6bef30fb52bd
G+_Steve Martin
Perhaps it would be best to get a PO box to put into these things then. OTOH, you can pretty much google someone's address already. With the Label and the Database the bad guys have a piece of public information and the fact that I own a quad-copter. Of course by definition they also have said UAS in their possession. That's how they got the ID. So unless they are looking to specifically steal this kind of tech, the information isn't all that alarming. If they do come by to find another UAS, they can also learn more about my personal security systems :)
G+_Wayne Black
Steve Martin Won't work. If you read the registration rules, you must include your physical address along with a mailing address if different.
