Guys I need your advice on what to do/use for a relatively simple media/ Steam in home streaming box for VERY cheap. I remember reading quite awhile ago that you could install Ubuntu/Linux on a PS3 as-well upgrade the hard drive. - so my question is would it Possible (Steam streaming and enough Power) / and does make sense to buy a cheap second hand PS3, install Ubuntu or Steam OS on it, and use the device with steam in-home streaming and as a media box to my 42 inch 1080p TV and get a decent gaming experience?

I'm not sure that you could install Steam OS on a PS3. I don't think it used the same x86 architecture as desktop hardware.

I know installing Ubuntu and Debian works - what's different about steam OS? Are other Linux operating systems just better at running on non pc based hardware?

The, 'install other OS' feature was removed by Sony around 2010. Unless you have a PS3 that hasn't been updated in more than four years, this isn't an option.

I'm pretty sure there should be ways to reactive that feature - you can do it on the slim which doesn't have that feature explicitly.
