G+_brett bennett
trying again, i'd like some advice - my home wireless security cameras operate in the 2.4ghz range and interfere with my computers that use 2.4ghz wifi. would the cantenna help with getting the wifi signal thru the noise being generated by the security camera devices? G+_Jason Perry
Cantenna's are directional so only if you are looking at getting your wifi signal from a point to another stationary point. With traditional wifi you are looking at going from a point (your router) to multiple points (your devices) I dont know all your details but you need enough traffic on a particular channel to cause issues I would wonder if other people's wifi are causing the issue not your cameras?? If rhat is the case the solution is as simple as changing what channel you are using in the 2.4GHz band
G+_Travis Hershberger
Also remember that you only have 3 2.4GHz wifi channels that don't overlap and cause interference with each other 1, 6, and 11. Hopefully your security cameras are on one of those so you can use one of the others. Get the wifi analyzer app if you have an Android or Apple phone/tablet and look at the signals that are in use. G+_Jason Perry
Are the camera's over wifi or just operate on 2.4GHz?
G+_Jason Marsh
I'd be willing to bet that if you're in an urban area your main problem is that 2.4GHz is just overcrowded. If you can, try putting the cameras on a separate access point and channel or if possible move your other devices to 5GHz.
G+_brett bennett
thanks folks - padre discussed this on the latest know how, seems like replacing the antennas that come with the cameras and the receiver with more focusable antennas might work. these cameras are from defender and they don't use my home wifi, they just broadcast on that 2.4 range and just drown out my wifi router's signals. on a 2.4 ghz wifi connection on a laptop i go from a solid 10mbit or more connection to 1mbit or less when the cameras are on. i have a few devices that do not have the ability to use the 5ghz range. G+_Jason Marsh
I just looked at their website and for some products they don't even have manuals online, only "placeholder" PDFs for if/when they decide to put a manual online. The specs read out like they're using standard networking protocols, which leads one to believe they are using 802.11 wifi, but they could have some rather dodgy radios or they could be using non-standard channel width. This is not something you're likely to fix with different antennae. Looks like you're going to have to move to the 5GHz band or try to RMA your cameras.
