G+_Jerome Semichon
Has anyone thought of recycling skully for Christmas? I built one as a quick (well 24h of printing) change of scenery between 2 quadcopter crashes - sorry builds :) - but now that Halloween's over we can't just store it away for a year. The temptation to reuse the base is too hard to resist. What could we replace the skull with? A glowing snowball seems a bit too easy. Lit up Christmas tree? G+_Shooter_FPV (Shooter_FP
Jerome Semichon A Christmas tree would be a great idea... I may just do that... I didn’t have time to get Skully together in time for Halloween but repurposing is a great idea...
G+_Jerome Semichon
I have 3 of these: thepihut.com - 3D Xmas Tree for Raspberry Pi – The Pi Hut coming shortly. Couldn't resist! (UK site, apologies). So that's 2 of the boys + me sorted but I must do something with skully. My 16-bit LED rings only turned up today so I used a spare 12 LED ring for skully with a quick change of the code. I have some fluorescent green filament... need to think a bit! G+_Shooter_FPV (Shooter_FP
Jerome Semichon Lucky for me when I ordered LED rings for the steampunk goggles (which was a HUGE hit on Halloween...), I ordered the bigger rings by mistake, so I have 2 of them collecting dust. I’m wondering about getting transparent filament and finding a tree to print...
G+_Jerome Semichon
Ken Jancef Great idea. transparent filament sounds good. I don't think I have enough left on the spool I have but I wonder how glow in the dark or fluorescent green filament (which happen to be in my store) would fare. Now I need to try it! It'd need a tree that would sit nicely on top of the hole in the base so the light can shine through the tree. The top plate may need filling up a bit too. So I know what I'm doing this weekend then! G+_Jerome Semichon
Ken Jancef Some good ideas on thingiverse, and a few that could be reused. Definitely a weekend project then.
G+_Shooter_FPV (Shooter_FP
Jerome Semichon I still need to order the Arduino and other stuff, and I need some filament. I may try translucent/transparent, just to see how it lights up. And i'd have to get some green filament to print the base with. I'll check out Thingiverse to see if I can find something too... maybe have my son paint some ornaments on it... :) Thanks for making me spend more money... lol... just kidding... :)
G+_Shooter_FPV (Shooter_FP
Jerome Semichon I can't seem to find any transparent filament in the brand I usually use, HatchBox. Every place I go seems to be sold out. Also, I was thinking about the project, and having a sensor. I could see why you'd have a sensor with Skully, but not sure about a tree... I'd probably want it lit all the time. Is there a way that maybe an audio file (Christmas music) could be played when close to the sensor? That would be pretty neat... Any suggestions for quality transparent PLA? I use HatchBox exclusively and never had any issues, but it looks like I'll have to change brands for this project... G+_Black Merc
How about keeping skully as-is, and just making hats for him? Santa hat for Christmas, rabbit ears for Easter...
G+_Shooter_FPV (Shooter_FP
Black Merc That's actually a great idea... :) Still need the transparent filament though... lol.
G+_Jerome Semichon
Black Merc that's a great idea. I'd prefer something a bit more cheerful for Christmas but that's personal! Ken Jancef I possibly ordered some transparent filament this morning although the definition of "transparent" is interesting with PLA! Time for some Tinkercad browsing... G+_Jerome Semichon
Ken Jancef I can't find affordable 1.75mm Hatchbox filament in the UK. Every so often a spool comes up on Amazon but that's about it. I use filament from 3dfilaprint instead. I've had to experiment with printing temperature but it's printing quite nicely on my i3 v2.1 clone. I've ordered a spool of transparent PLA. I don't know how you'd go about the music with an Arduino but that's where the HC-SR04 could be quite handy. I'd be interested if anyone knows how to drive a speaker from an Arduino (for the DIY door buzzer + camera + kitchen sink that's in the works). G+_Jerome Semichon
Ken Jancef A little tinkercad later (bear in mind that stick (wo)men look just the part with my inexistent drawing skills)... How about something like this? tinkercad.com - 3D design Skully Christmas Tree v1 ? I've no idea how it'll print. I've hollowed it inside although I had to leave a board/floor to each "stage" of the tree. It's going to need some form of supports, I suspect so this could get tricky to remove. So external supports would work but not internal ones. I may have to add them manually. Or it may be easier to cut it in half, print it flat and assemble it. I've not added anything to screw it to the base either, yet.
G+_Shooter_FPV (Shooter_FP
Not bad... I think it'd work... I was thinking maybe this: thingiverse.com - christmas tree lamp by toolmoon
G+_John Sullivan
Perhaps something along the lines of Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas?
G+_Shooter_FPV (Shooter_FP
cosmic Ray For my house that would actually work, since my 10 year old son LOVES Halloween, so he'd probably use it for both... lol

G+_Jerome Semichon
First attempt at printing failed at the top of the base when the base lifted off the heated bed and started moving with the print head. Not good. Re-levelled bed, cleaned the plate, applied 3DLAC spray and restarted the print. It looks like it's printing ok now. The slicer only added supports to the outside as the angle of the tree rings is enough to self-support. We'll see what's on the printer when I wake up tomorrow morning. I've modified the base a little bit to add 2 screw holes aligned with skully's base plate. I couldn't get the 3rd hole. The base of the tree is calculated to cover all the hole in the plate - but only just. We'll see in the morning what the fluorescent transparent filament looks like. G+_Jerome Semichon
Ken Jancef Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ Skully recycled for Christmas. Minor printing mishap overnight solved with a bit of glue! I've fixed the tinkercad model if you want it: https://www.tinkercad.com/things/lgkNVscisiz. All looks good and ready for Advent. Happy kids (and me!). PS Could change the code to add more green but that's being perfectionist. :)
