G+_M S
3d Printer suggestions. First time poster here, long time viewer. As I recall the Monoprice Maker Select or Maker Select Plus was highly recommended on previous shows. Is that still one of the best values in 3d printing available? I am just beginning, so I would like a printer that is able to print a variety of filaments so I can experiment, but I don't need to pay an arm and a leg for that feature. Easy of use, ability to use non-proprietary filaments, heated bed, ability to use 3rd party design software, and decent resolution and speed are all high on my list of requests. Thanks for all of your thoughts. I look forward to adding some of my projects here.
G+_Mike Ponschke
In order to print ABS on either of those, with a high degree of success, you would need to add an enclosure.
G+_Shooter_FPV (Shooter_FP
And a hot end upgrade would help too. I have the Plus version, and with no mods at all it printed PLA awesomely. I did try ABS but it didn't go as well, but I think I could have changed some settings to make it work better. So the mods I did was: 1. Micro-Swiss hot end upgrade. 2. Micro-Swiss lever/extruder plate upgrade. 3. Built my own Enclosure (which you can find my post somewhere on here about a month back. There is a popular extruder plate print on Thingiverse, but I'm on my phone and can't grab the link, sorry... But they say that if you want to print with flexible filament like NinjaFlex, the extruder plate mod is needed because you have to slow down the flow of filament and that filament tends to clog up in the extruder assembly... so the plate mod helps with that. I also bought a borosilicate glass plate for ABS if I need it, but have only done one other ABS print and it stuck well to the stock plate. Remember to clean the plate with alcohol... I do it maybe 2-3 times per week. All-in-all, I LOVE my Select Plus. And sorry for the long post... ?
G+_David Peach
I have the Select Plus and was very pleased with it (until it could no longer regulate it's hotend temperature). I think any printer that can print multiple filaments, and costs less than$1000, will need some figuring out. Not all filaments are easy to print. Even with the current state of my printer (unworking until I have time to do some rewiring) I think it is a great printer. Because it is an open source design, and there is nothing proprietary (main control board is on shaky ground to be called open source), it is possible to replace anything on the printer with off the shelf parts. Or build your own. If you're not inclined to tinker and want to pay for the convenience of it just working, then there may be better ones, but I'm still a fan. I have considered though that, while the Plus is great and worth the $100 difference, that the non-Plus version is as good of a printer and maybe a bit easier to modify if the same thing were to happen to it that I am dealing with on mine. G+_Shooter_FPV (Shooter_FP
I agree with David Peach about the "regular" Select. But unfortunately you have to do mods to both models to do what you want them to do. I just went with the Plus because I could... :) I'm trying to get the school department that I work for to buy a few of the non-Plus printers... they have two MakerBots and two Soliddoodles that make better doorstops than printers
G+_Jeff Hata
Have the Maker Select v2 and love it!
G+_Michael Young
I bought the Maker Select v2 based on the Know How recommendation last month, and have been quite happy. As warned there is some tweaking required, however the plethera of support across YouTube and the net makes setup a breeze. I would continue to highly recommend.
