hmm... I may start to use Office again...

This is why it is a goofy mistake to dismiss Microsoft. They have been working hard, and it starts to show.

Look at that... email, all the power of Office, Onenote, cloud,  maps, social, music streaming, Skype and news.

MS have been doing a lot of cool stuff for quite a while now. There's nothing wrong with using Office. They (MS) do have a couple of problems though: they are not 'cool' at the moment, so are overlooked for a lot of the things they do. I've mentioned before that I think there is an implicit bias in the tech community. For example, most seem to use a subset of Macs, iOS and Android. I've seen reviews where thinks aren't 'intuitive' or certain functions were difficult to find when they just weren't what the reviewer was used to.

Anyhoo, this new MS is definitely worth taking a closer look at.

Maybe if they didn't practice FUD, vendor lock in, and embrace-extend-extinguish as normal business practices in the past, I'd consider them today. They saw the migration to the web/cloud over a decade ago and did everything they could to prevent it, and now that they've lost that fight they put out new products for the web and say "Hey, look at us!" Sorry MS, not going to trust you again with your past.

It's a lot to do with how much 'goodwill' they have. E.g. Apple have made great products that people love, so they have a lot of goodwill from the public. Therefore, they can make quite a lot of mistakes, but still be able to be incredibly successful. MS used up any goodwill they had a long time ago, so people won't even look at their products. I guess everyone here has been bitten by MS and do not want to try their new services even though they may be very good.

Brandon Mitchell  I like the look of Windows Phone, and I am looking for an Android tablet (hopefully Sony will have something for CES), and with iOS I would choose MS apps, as I am not locked into a particular ecosystem. It takes MS to be the underdog to do something interesting.

Dennis Mix  'Since XP was dropped' makes it sound as if they cut SP support short - XP had a good run.

I always thought MS was making a mistake trying to be someone in the consumer market. They're a business package, and they had better remember that. Their switch to a subscription platform I thought was way overdue; companies find upgrading to be a major headache and expense, but a cloud-based enterprise solution with an annual fee is exactly the business model they need. I also thought it was an excellent idea for them to make their iOS apps free - most people done want to do business on their phones, but just make some changes in a pinch. Don't bother trying to make them pay for that, there isn't enough money in that small subset to bother with. Besides, it'll get people thinking positively about MS again if they have a convenient product on their iOS devices. I actually wish them luck - their moves have made my office work easier.
