G+_John Hamlyn
Hi guys. I got interested in watching your Networking series and decided to upgrade from a Comcast Gateway Arris TG862 to the Arris Surfboard SB6141 modem and a Synology RT1900ac router. I also watched most Youtube vids showing how easy it was to get up and going. I set up the Arris SB6141 modem first and could get online. I then set up the Synology router via the wizard set up. Got to the last screen to exit and sign back in and can't get online over wifi. It says that it is connected (on my laptops) but no internet. The first time I set this up with the wizard I did manage to get into the SRM somehow and I looked around, disabled WEP. Maybe I did something I shouldn't have done, but I seem to recall that "Not Connected to Internet" was showing ? It all went by fast and ended up with no internet connection after reconnecting. I did a hard factory reset 3 times with no success and could never could return to SRM (other than for initial setup) I'm sure that the error is on my part in doing the last 2 of the 4 step in the set up process. The first 2 parts are router password and SSID password which I'm sure that I got those right. Part 3 Operation Mode set to "Wireless Router External access to SRM set to" Disabled" Part 4 Internet Connection set to "Auto IP" As I said, I did 3 resets and went through the entire process with no connection to internet via wifi. I changed part 3 setup step to "Wireless AP". And not being able to get back into SRM. I did get it to work through the router ethernet connection once but not the last time. Very frustrated and confused so I went back to the Comcast gateway and got back onto my old wifi setup. Any help would be appreciated. I don't need any port forwarding just regular wifi. G+_Ben Reese
You have an ethernet cable from your modem to the WAN port of your router? The WAN port should be blue according to pics. Also make sure the lights on the router and modem show connections.

G+_Jason Marsh
What subnet are the router and the modem running? These should be different. Doesn't matter much what they are, as long as they are both non-routable (private) subnets, and they aren't both trying to run the same subnet. You'd think newer APs would be smart enough to avoid this problem, but that's not always so. Can you ping the AP and the modem? If you can ping the AP but not the modem, then the AP has an issue routing traffic to the modem. Have you changed the default admin passwords on both devices? Should always be first step in any setup, but I know my modem/router/AP combo POS won't let me do much until I've changed the password. Is something odd setup on the WiFi? Radius or a captive portal? Either would have you in a walled garden of sorts until you satisfied some condition. DHCP settings (all devices); set DNS servers to Google's or some other free DNS servers not on your ISP's net. Do a tracert from the modem, the AP, and the PC. Getting long enough already... If you can test the scenarios with both wired and wireless that may yield enough info for a diagnosis. G+_John Hamlyn
Thank you, Ben and Jason, for the advice. I will make another attempt tomorrow at setting up the new Synology and modem and will check the settings you gave. Thanks again.
G+_Brian Moses
'I set up the Arris SB6141 modem first and could get online.' After this step the modem should be power cycled before attaching the router.
G+_Benjamin Webb
Brian Moses You can restart it or simply clone the address on the wan of the router. Used to have to do this to get DSL to network.
G+_John Hamlyn
Update to my router problem. I switched over from my Comcast gateway to my new Arris modem, got online via Ethernet and went to the SB6141 Web Management page. I wrote some addresses down and noticed that in the Modem IP Mode it indicated IPv6 Only but in the end it was just fine. Had me worried though. I then did a factory reset on the Synology router and went through the setup but skipped the 4th part which was an option. The options were PPPoE, Manual IP, Auto IP or skip. I did all 3 yesterday. Completed the setup, tried to get online, NOPE! Removed all gear. Went back to Comcast. Sulked for an hour and decided 1 last go at it. Did the whole process over again, but. On the part 4 of the router setup I did the Auto IP internet connection (I did try this yesterday but......) Ethernet connected to the router I did finally get on to the Web SRM and signed in. Then the WiFi was activated. Not sure what the heck I did different form yesterday but it's up and running just fine. Thank you all for all the help from yesterday. This community is great. G+_Jason Marsh
Glad to hear it's sorted out. I don't have a Synology router, but you may have just been up against SRM not being happy with something and so locking down WiFi. Remember to backup your configuration so you don't have to go through this again if you ever need to hard reset that router again.
