Piracy or Exposure

I have a friend who had an exchange student from an Asian country. They said when she got here and tried to download music she was horrified that she had to pay for it. It turns out that the government where she's from does the pirating and passes on the good to the citizens. This way they pay no attention to the rights they've had stripped away. There's a whole generation being raised like this. It's a cultural norm to get digital goods for free. ?

Looks to be largely an issue of availability.  As they point out, 95% of piracy is in China & Russia but I didn't see any breakdown on how the app sold (were 95% of purchases also from Russia & China?)  Besides, I don't claim to know the availability or reliability of Google Play within those countries.

They also talk about how they made a decision to only release it for the few devices they could test themselves.  While this means a better user experience (not something to be dismissed lightly) it also means that anyone who only has untested devices cannot use this app officially.

Great find Tom Gehrke interesting story & I can't wait to hear what AAA thinks next week :)

Brian Tate Thanks for that comment! Cultural/national differences like that are fascinating to me. It's easy to take a myopic view even when dealing with a global marketplace.

John Mink It's The Verge so it wasn't hard to find. ;) I just thought the discussion from the AAA community would be enlightening and so far I'm not disappointed.  Great community.
