G+_Pete Warner
Does anyone know of any good instructions on how to setup home network monitoring that will alert you when questionable network traffic is discovered? Specifically, we are looking for alerts when the kids go to questionable websites (but we don't want to block) and I would like if it also detected and alerted as an IDS. Anyone know a good link or resource I can use to set this up at home? I am running DD-WRT today.
G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
Well... Skydog used to be a great solution... but Comcast bought them and killed the product. :(
G+_Pete Warner
Darn you Comcast! (shaking fist) Thanks, Padre.
G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
You COULD just leave Wireshark running... the Filter is fantastically powerful once you know how to use it. -- You can have it search for the websites you want to be alerted about. G+_Pete Warner
What about a cron job that looks at the outgoing traffic logs? All it would need to do is pull out each unique domain visited for each source IP on the network. It would then have to compare those URLs against a list like Shalla's List (http://www.shallalist.de/). It would then generate an alert based on the category of the URL - maybe send an email. I was hoping someone had thought of something like this already and I could just follow their instructions...
