G+_Sean Miller
Hello All. I've been watching the show since Iyaz Akhtar (I know I'm misspelling that). I wish to make my own mesh wifi network using powerline networking as the backbone.. I don't want to spend $100 or more per node so I figure maybe I can make it work. My main router is a D-link DIR-850 located upstairs and connected to a TP-Link Powerline Adapter. Downstairs on opposite corners of the house, I have 2 TP-Link AV500's to act as access points. Even turning down the transmission power I still have bit of overlap, but I want the system to be bulletproof so my wife will stop complaining about dropouts. My question is should I set the same SSID and password for all 3 Wifi points? Should I set the same 2.4 GHz channel on all 3? How seamless will the handoff be from one device to the other? Thanks for your attention, Sean

G+_Travis Hershberger
You should set a different channel on all 3, same SSID and password. Handoff should be fine. Personally, I'd turn the power all the way up on the centrally located one and the other two down. I assume you don't need new equipment?
G+_Sean Miller
I didn't want to buy new equipment just because the mesh networking brands said I should. I'm glad to know I don't.

G+_Black Merc
The new "mesh" hardware is suppose to be 'cleaner' hand offs from one node to the other. You may have problems in areas where signals are equal and radios get confused which to use.
G+_Akira Yamanita
Handoff in this environment will be highly device dependent. APs with a central controller can help aid roaming decisions and even move clients around as needed. Most devices should be fine, but some are stubbornly sticky.
