G+_Steve Ryerse
Hello Robert and Brian. Just saw Know How (136).. (Love the show!!) regarding you said you will talk about DD-Wrt,Tomato etc. I would like you to show the differences between all the 3rd party router firmware. I have tried DD-Wrt and it was OK. Better than the original firmware but when I installed Tomato (Shibby) firmware on an ASUS RT-N66U router IT BLEW ME AWAY!!! I have dealt with lower end Cisco routers to decent Fortigate routers and Tomato Shibby on the ASUS RT-N66U is extremely powerful similar to Fortigate and MUCH cheaper. Does DD-Wrt have the detail monitoring? I don't think so. I use the VLAN on my business. Great to isolate LAN and wireless guests from your work servers/workstations. I also love the fact that I can give restrictions for my kids. (disable WiFi or through MAC address limit speed, time, etc) I can monitor websites that they go to and search items.QOS is better than any other router I have ever used. I am not over protected but do like to keep an eye on my kids activity. With OpenDNS and the option in Tomato to override the DNS value I can really limit their exposure. Again I have tried other 3rd party firmwares like DD-WRT BUT (maybe they were older versions or something) I find Tomato (Shibby) extremely powerful and easy to work with. Let me know what you think!!
G+_Steve C
I wanted to try Tomato too but since it only works on a few older models there really isn't much choice besides DD-WRT.
G+_Steve Ryerse
That is a limited factor for tomato is that it only works on certain routers BUT if you wanted a decent router that can handle the traffic you will pay for a decent router and I have to say ASUS is one of the best companies for computer hardware. They are like Panasonic for phones. Toyota for cars (certain models years).
G+_Steve C
When someone says Router I don't normally think of ASUS but I've got an ASUS Chromebook that seems well made. I don't think I've ever seen an ASUS router although Amazon seems to have a wide selection. I'm using some Linksys WRT160V3 models with DD-WRT that work well, better than any D-Link or Netgear models I've tried and I got them at Goodwill for only $3.99. They are the little black ones that look like UFO's but Tomato doesn't have a version that works on them.

G+_Nicholas Wilde
For those that want a little beefed up version of the stock Asuswrt firmware, check out Asuswrt-merlin. G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
I have tried out a few different models and brands over the years and I've got to say Asus takes the cake. Don't get dlink. 1 maybe 2 updates for a model then dead. I have the rt-n16 running tomato(I know out of date firmware but its just an ap now. Pfsense handles the security) and I've got the rt-n66r(similar to the 66u) that I left stock but upgrade the firmware. I ran into a few issues using it as an ap where it kept popping up a captive portal both over WiFi and the lan saying there was no web when clearlynthere was. It just my backup right now. Or might go to my dad. Great routers though. Although I might sell one/both and get a unifi ap instead.
