Has anybody got any ideas for a simple reliable battery backup (5000 mAh approx.) for the Raspberry Pi. It needs to switch automatically. I was looking at some portable phone chargers but they do not charge themselves while charging the device.

I've been looking for something like this myself.  Currently the only way I've figured out to do it is with a custom circuit that will take care of changing sources when the wall power goes away.

There is a KH episode about this. Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ Used a US battery to run one. I think the episode dealt with running a Pi on solar but the principal is the same.

Also... the Energizer XP18000... Will run a RasPi for about a week. :)
