G+_John Nooncaster
More hard drive help... I'm considering a video surveillance setup for home with a few IP cameras and love the idea of using a Synology setup for the NVR (esp since they include the control software). For a single drive setup, WD red? Purple? Blue? Thanks
G+_John Mink
Since you're using a single drive for this, I assume you're not overly worried about keeping the data around?
G+_John Mink
For a single drive, (meaning no mirroring/raid): Don't go red. They're very social and get lonely without a good raid/mirror. :p But really, don't go RED for a single drive. They look like they dying faster than other drives (outside a RAID) because of how they're designed. Purple (as far as I know) is designed for multiple writes video camera. So unless you have more than 1 camera simultaneously streaming, don't spend extra money. As for blue, I'd go black over blue. Even if you don't need the "performance" you get a 5 year warranty vs a 3 year and last time I checked (so this could have changed) there wasn't a huge price difference. G+_Travis Hershberger
For video storage Purple. You really won't want to use it for anything else tho.
G+_Joshua Hamlett
That is what Purple is made for.
G+_John Mink
I re-read this question, and saw that you said "a few IP cameras"...so yes, multiple video cameras is exactly what purple is made for! I can't find this explicitly, but WD seems to indicate that each purple has 4 heads per drive (WD seems to indicate 1080p video quality, no mention of FPS)...so keep that in mind when you're deciding how many drives you want i nyour RAID.
