G+_Jared Bartimus
I emailed Elizabeth Forro with the FAA (UAS Integration Office) and thought the responses might be useful to others. > I want to make sure I am operating safely/legally. Do I need to notify all private use airports without control towers in addition to public airports? Thank you for your inquiry. Section 336 of public law 112-95 draws no distinction between public and private airports, or those with vs. without control towers. Per the law, you would need to contact any airport, public or private, with or without a tower. > Thank you for the quick response. Does the FAA have any guidelines on minimum distance for flight near power plants? (I live approximately 1 mile from a nuclear power plant) A standing Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) exists with regard to power plants and other critical infrastructure, and applies to both manned and unmanned aircraft: FDC 4/0811 SPECIAL NOTICE. THIS IS A RESTATEMENT OF A PREVIOUSLY ISSUED ADVISORY NOTICE. IN THE INTEREST OF NATIONAL SECURITY AND TO THE EXTENT PRACTICABLE, PILOTS ARE STRONGLY ADVISED TO AVOID THE AIRSPACE ABOVE, OR IN PROXIMITY TO SUCH SITES AS POWER PLANTS (NUCLEAR, HYDRO-ELECTRIC, OR COAL), DAMS, REFINERIES, INDUSTRIAL COMPLEXES, MILITARY FACILITIES AND OTHER SIMILAR FACILITIES. PILOTS SHOULD NOT CIRCLE AS TO LOITER IN THE VICINITY OVER THESE TYPES OF FACILITIES. Our Air Traffic Organization asks all operators that will be operating near a Nuclear Power Plant (3 nautical miles or closure) to call the Plant Operator to advise them that they will be there.
