Hey Know How... Just finished watching the latest episode and I am a surgical tech who does robotic surgery with the da Vinci surgical system by intuitive. The da Vinci was the first robotic surgical unit to be used to perform surgery remotely. The surgeon was in France, the patient was in New York and he or she had their gallbladder removed.

It's true, the idea of remote surgery is there but the FDA will not allow it, it's troublesome to guarantee a complete connection 100% of the time in a hospital setting using current technologies in a budget. When the long distance surgery was performed with the da Vinci, a fiber optic cable was ran dedicated from New York to France just for the procedure.

You are right in that there are security risks, which is why it's not allowed just yet for remote surgery but there are a ton of fail safes in place because it does connect to the internet so when there is an issue during surgery tech support can look into the robot to see what the problem is.

It's cool tech. Check out intuitives robot. It looks exactly like the one at the university of Washington.
