G+_Eddie Silva
Thank you for the episode about routers and switches. It's making me think about my own network. However, I have a question about switches. I am routing Ethernet in my house, should I use a switch or hub to distribute Internet to each room? G+_Eddie Silva
Service to the switch will be from a router, btw.
G+_Wolf 68k
Switch. A switch is like a hub but smarter. I don't think anyone really uses hubs any more.
G+_Eddie Silva
Great!!! Should I use web managed plus? I guess it allows me to track traffic or is that overkill for home applications.
G+_Black Merc
I agree with +Wolf 68k but hubs are not made anymore.( only found in resale shops, eBay and the deep dark net closets that have been forgotten about) current switches direct traffic only to and from where needed, hereby reducing network congestion. With this in mind... try to connect devices that talk to each other the most on one switch. This will free-up the router from having to redirect everything and focus on traffic bound for the internet.
G+_Kai Siers
Use unmanaged switches like the Netgear ProSafe GS, they work great in a home-network. I have 4 of them and we even use them at work from time to time. Never had a problem with one.
G+_Ben Reese
Yes, unmanaged switches are fine for home and small business use, but probably a better alternative to “Steve's 3 dumb routers" is VLANs like the Digital Jesuit has setup. Managed switches aren't really even necessary for that, but they do make it easier.
G+_Eddie Silva
Thanks everyone! Net gear has a rebate on their switches. I think I'm going with the 8port netgear switch. Thanks!!!
