G+_Ben Reese
I just got a new DOCSIS 3.0 Arris modem/router combo from Time Warner to go with my new faster service. There are a few features I still wanted from my Linksys DD-WRT router, so I wanted to run my setup by the gurus here to see if I'm missing something. * Arris - DHCP off, IP changed to put it on the same subnet I used before, updated the SSID/PW to that of my Linksys router. * Linksys - moved to the garage and connected LAN-LAN port with the Arris over a cable I had previously run. * Linksys - updated DHCP to give the Default Gateway of the Arris routers IP. Anything I'm missing or anything that seems like a bad idea? I had a few DHCP reserves (static IPs) setup that I didn't want to lose and I couldn't find those options available on the Arris router. The biggest risk I see is that if the Linksys fails I lose DHCP.
G+_Travis Hershberger
Why not just use a static IP instead of DHCP reservations? I know it can be a bit harder to get DNS resolving properly in that case, but it shouldn't be a show stopper.
G+_Ben Reese
I thought about it and still might. This is a bit more convenient for phones, tablets, laptops; but those usually don't need static IPs.
