G+_Ben Reese
Is XPenology worth considering? Anyone have experience with it? Synology seems like the best out of the box NAS solution and I know FreeNAS is probably the most popular DIY option, but XPenology seems like a good alternative to both. Thoughts? G+_Rud Dog
Would be nice if this could be loaded on my first generation Drobo and share box. Those lost support long ago and sit with min usage.
G+_Ben Reese
Is your Drobo USB or NAS? If USB you could probably install this on a small PC. If NAS, I'd wonder if the hardware is compatible.
G+_Ben Reese
I'm just looking at the price of something like the 415 play ($500 US), but I can get a 3rd Gen i7 desktop on Craigslist for $250. The desktop will use quite a bit more power and take up more room, but it's a whole lot cheaper.
G+_Rud Dog
Ben Reese First purchased the DRO4D-U from data robotics and it only had the USB port. To add Ethernet connectivity Drobo came out with and I purchased the DR00D-E. They stopped support and since it worked flawlessly this fact went unnoticed. When it was time to add services it was to late so been looking for a way to load any software to use my Drobo and Droboshare. (Wish could post pics when commenting rather then links would be so much simpler.)
G+_Ben Tyger
I don't know much about USR's consumer line, but I've been less then pleased with their DroboElite product. It is fine while it works, but if you any type of issue with it, trying to fine out the issue yourself, is damn near impossible. There's no way to automate shutdown for clean shutdown with a UPS, no performance monitoring, no SNMP support, and the alert monitor software they provided is only a desktop app, so unless you have a desktop logged in all the time of the issue you may not get the notification email of issues. These may be more of an issue with their business class devices but I bought a business class device for business and I found it lacking in a significant areas. These issues may not be as important for customers of their consumer class devices. ?
