G+_Ben Reese
IPv6... I’d love to see an explanation/tutorial/recommendations on how to properly do an IPv6 network. I think I understand IPv4 networking pretty well, but I’m not real sure where to start with v6 or even if I should leave it enabled on my network. Benjamin Webb had posted some tips a while back - including requesting a /56 subnet from your ISP. Is that something I should expect to pay extra for (like with a static v4 address)? Is it a bad idea to give a VM inside my network a routable v6 address? Does v6 support VLANs the way v4 does? Does my switch have to be v6 compatible? G+_Shooter_FPV (Shooter_FP
Ben Reese I agree. I am a computer tech for a school department. We may (or may not) see an advantage with using IPv6. Great suggestion!
G+_Sean Miller
I really want to know about IPv6 in terms of setting up a home server accessible from the outside.
G+_Telford Dorr
X3! A KnowHow episode on IPV6 basics/setup/configuration/usage would be really great!. Sooner or later, changeover will be mandatory. Might as well be ahead of the curve...
G+_Rud Dog
It might be time for Twit to launch a dedicated channel for projects like this and others.
G+_Ben Reese
OK, so I chatted with Spectrum today to try to find out what they could tell me. And I'm just as confused as before I began. The conversation went something like this: Me: What is my IPv6 subnet size Spectrum: You don't have an IPv6 address Me: My router says I have an IPv6 address Sp: Hang on, let me check... Sp: Most Spectrum users should have an IPv6 address. Me: Thanks, can you tell me what size my subnet is? [Gives the agent the IPv6 address] Spectrum: You have /128 Me: That's how many bits are in an IPv6 address. It seems small? How can I get a /64 or /60 or /56 subnet? Sp: Let me check... ... ... Sp: You have a /48 and a /64. Me: Thank you for your help. And, I'm still confused. I guess I need to figure out how to assign one of my VMs or a Pi a Global (?) address and see if I can connect from somewhere else.
