G+_Ben Reese
Asterisk BPX... Anyone have a favorite distro they recommend? It's been a long time, but I've tried Asterisk by itself, I've tried FreePBX (I think), PBXInAFlash, and maybe OpenPBX. My goal is to create a intercom system, so it will be for internal extensions only - though maybe I'll add a SIP trunk later.
G+_Peter Hanse
We use SIP phones but use service like OnSIP which does offer free service for SIP to SIP phones and have been wonderful at support (USA based) and like their pricing if you want to use SIP to Standard Phone. onsip.com - Pricing | OnSIP If you want Onsite I have seen some distributions that load on RasPI that would be good option to keep it low power consumption. G+_Travis Hershberger
Fromm the people who deal with these every day, the only one they recommend is FreePBX. No, I'm NOT an expert with pbx systems! Ref: mangolassi.it - FreePBX
G+_Jason Perry
This is a project I have been trying to get to. Ben Reese?, what do you have in mind to power this project? I am interested in the details.
G+_Ben Reese
I've got a few ideas - just trying to work out the details. Asterisk (whatever flavor) will run on either a VM or a Pi - VM for now. Clients will hopefully be Pi Zero-W if I can work out the details (no on-board audio, not sure about the SIP client yet, screen or no screen...). If not that, perhaps cheap Android devices (some <$30, but also susceptible to KRACK * sigh *). First step is the PBX, second step is testing with the Android/Apple devices I have, 3rd step is figuring out which box I packed my Pi Zero-W in to see if it will pair with a Bluetooth speaker.... G+_Jason Perry
Have you thought about the advantages of using a docker container vs a VM? I am not promoting either. It is just something I have been thinking about.
G+_Ben Reese
I haven't considered Docker - though I probably should. It has a bigger disadvantage of me not being experienced with it. Although, I've wanted to do something with Docker, so I may try it.
G+_Jason Perry
Now that you can run docker on a pi my biggest curiosity is, can you move a container from an arm based environment to an x86 based one.
G+_Scott W
Interesting project, looking forward to the solutions.
G+_Ben Tyger
Jason Perry I would think not because they're compiled binaries to a specific instruction set. The Docker apps would still share the same kernel space.
G+_Ben Reese
Update.... I decided to try FreePBX again (looks like I had created a FreePBX VM a couple years ago). Install took a couple hours on my Xpenology NAS, so I ended up installing it in Virtual Box on my newer machine, which took about 20 minutes (maybe because I gave it 3 cores and 2 GB RAM). It was a bit of a hastle getting a static IP set and a default gateway, but I finally got it to a working state - maybe temporarily. I tried out about 3 different clients on Android and iPhone plus the native SIP support on Android. At least one app (MizuDroid, I think) will auto answer, but I can't find a option to always answer on speaker phone. We just moved, so now I have to figure out where I packed my Pi Zero to see what I can do with that.

G+_Jason Perry
That's what I went with too. I wish there was a native client. What was your experience with Android's client?
G+_Ben Reese
The native client received extension calls fine, but I couldn't figure out how to make extension calls from the dialer. Zoiper on Android worked pretty much just like Zoiper on iPhone from the little bit I tested. I don't remember if I got Sipdroid working. The battery died on that phone before I got too far. CSipSimple and MizuDroid worked well - though I didn't test all the settings and features. All warned about battery draining concerns - including the native client. All had options to integrate with the dialer, but I never tried.
G+_Ben Reese
Jason Perry any apps that you've tried or preferred over others?
G+_Jason Perry
I dropped trying cell phones because my wife isn't quick on picking up new tech, and it wasn't the best on my GS2. Just limited it to an ATA. I forward known numbers to the appropriate cell
