G+_Dan Squires
Hi all, I recently got a Synology ds215j NAS after hearing Padre's continuous recommendations on a number of twit shows. My question is - what is the best solution for backing up the NAS itself? Getting Crashplan up and running on it has been an exercise in frustration... I know another option would be to get another device in a different location and rsync to it, but that's not really in the budget right now. I'd love to hear any suggestions people might have. Thanks!
G+_Travis Hershberger
Simplest solution is just a couple USB drives you can keep elsewhere and switch them out each week/month making a fresh backup each time.
G+_Dan Squires
Travis Hershberger Thanks for the input. Something like that would work, but I'm looking for an approach that would be more automated.
G+_James Newsom
You might want to take a look at Amazon Glacier Services to see if it would be a good online based backup system. For my particular situation I opted to go for two Synology units at twice the price. I purchased two DS414 units and have one installed at a remote location where it OpenVPNs into the network and I use TimeBackup to rsync from my house unit to the offsite archive location and it has proven to work very well. Obviously, it is twice the price and you have to have someplace where you can house the remote offsite unit but I have been very happy with the results so far.
