G+_Maciej Kos
Battery-powered RFID reader In my research project, I need to know when participants are entering their office and send these data to a server (all participants would first sign consent forms, the study would be IRB-approved, so no privacy violation here). These data would trigger sending a text message to their phones. My idea is to attach RFID tags to participants' entry cards and read them using an RIFD reader attached to an entry gate. This reader would either have a mobile module with a SIM card or be connected to a nearby laptop via bluetooth. The main constraint is that there are no power outlets to connect the reader, so it would need to be battery-powered (I can change batteries every 24 hours). Could you please suggest a suitable battery-power RFID reader or propose an alternative solution? I know very little about hardware, so please be gentle :) Thanks! G+_David Peach
Any RFID reader that works with Arduino or Raspberry Pi could be battery powered. Look at the offerings at Sparfun or Adafruit. These will require someone who knows about making a hardware project, but they are available. A Raspberry Pi solution could do the data logging directly. Arduino would need to send the data somewhere or you need an SD card data logger. The point though is that it is possible to make a battery powered version. Didn't look into pre built options. G+_Maciej Kos
Thanks for your comment. I would strongly prefer a commercial product because if it fails, nobody can blame it on me :) I will look into the solutions you suggested. I read that RFID readers are very power hungry, so I am wondering if this is even a viable idea.
