G+_Michael Heinz
Maaaannnn.... I was all ready to plunk down and buy a Taranis transmitter/receiver combo from HobbyKing but, guess what, the AC adapters are out of stock. I would have just bought it anyway and charged it from my LiPo charger but the Taranis manual explicitly says don't do that. Any suggestions for an alternate charger or a good source the Taranis X9D Plus plus receiver combo? I
G+_Taylor Graham
You should definitely charge the taranis battery outside the radio. That way if it explodes, it doesn't kill the radio. If you're charging it with a lipo charger, you just have to remember that the taranis battery isn't a lipo. Its a NiMH battery, charge appropriately. You'll also need a 2 cell balance connector to connect anything to the battery. If I were you, I'd just order the HK 1500mah LiFE battery, solder on a 2 cell balance lead, and use that for your taranis. The stock battery barely lasts an hour. The 1500mah LiFE battery will go for 4+ hours, hold a charge practically forever, and is less likely to explode than the NiMH.
G+_Michael Heinz
Hmmm... Not to contradict you but according to HK the Taranis currently ships with a 2000mah battery so your info on how long the battery will last might be old. Thanks for the video, though, from that it looks like I could use a 2S LiPo I have laying around.
G+_Taylor Graham
Ah I see, the updated version might ship with a different battery. The older version came with a terrible 700mah. You can still charge it with any charger, just make sure you select the right settings on your charger, and know what kind of chemistry you have in your battery. Also, the taranis ac adapter is a regular 12v DC supply I believe. You should be able to pick one up anywhere
G+_Carl Elton
Michael Heinz Here is a link for the battery mod for the Taranis. I been using it for a couple of months and it works great. The LiFe battery is about $7 at Hobby King.
G+_Joshua Delaughter
Getfpv.com has them, got mine in today. Combo with the x8r and AC adapter and strap.
G+_Michael Heinz
So, aside from the ridiculous number of buttons you don't need - how is it?
G+_Joshua Delaughter
I love it, the customization possibilities are endless. I also just got the FS Attitude v2 fpv kit, so the voice and haptic feedback will be great for the battery and rssi alerts, as I don't have any OSD yet. The sticks are really nice and smooth, they have a ratchet system on the Y axis, which I like, but I've heard others complain about it.
G+_Michael Heinz
For the battery alert - do you need an additional sensor or does the receiver provide that automatically?
G+_Joshua Delaughter
The receiver that comes in the combo (X8r) supports telemetry, but it only provides receiver voltage and RSSI out of the box. You'll need telemetry modules that plug into the Smart Port for battery voltage, gps, etc. The battery voltage module is basically a lipo alarm with output, so it can plug into your battery's balance lead, and report data on all of the cells, which is awesome, but it is an extra module to have onboard, and the X8r is bulky. I've see a lot of people opt for the D4r-ii receiver, which is much smaller, and supports analog telemetry. This means you'll have to plug the telemetry wires into your flight controller that's getting the battery voltage from a lead on your PDB, and it can only give you total voltage, not per cell. Also, one thing to note about the D4r-ii is that it's a 4ch pwm, and can support at least 8 channels over ppm, but only after a firmware update, so if you choose to get that receiver, it would be wise to get the flashing cable at the same time. (I learned that one the hard way). Also Carson is spot on, "Painless360" on youtube has a great playlist of like 32 videos on the Taranis, from out of box, to all ready to go. G+_Taylor Graham
D4R-II FTW. Perfect RX. Get one. Telemetry is stupid easy to setup. Also, it will do 7 channels over ppm without the update.
G+_Joshua Delaughter
Taylor Graham nice, I thought it was only 6 without the update, good to know
