You give them exact specs for how you want the foam cut and they build it to your design. You can have it cut to fit a case you already own or buy a new case from them.

Been pondering making a hot wire and cut my own (but even 'raw' sheets are pricey).

But what I tend to do is just back-fill the cheap vacuum formed packaging with spray foam.

I spent some time as an amateur astronomer, they taught me to be afraid of the spray foam because outgassing might damage the optics - no problem for quads though, I'm sure.

Nope.

Don't put the FVP in while foam is still curing.

Optics on a FVP aren't even in same class (nor the coatings, if they have any coatings)
